It is a common knowledge that investments in agriculture do play an essential role in the economic field for a sustainable growth, as well as in the food production security.
Therefore, in 1962 the European Union decided to create the common agriculture policy (CAP) to support the farming business. The policy was translated into direct subsidies to farmers, tariffs on imports, quotas on imports and minimum prices. However, it has been reformed various times during the last decades.

Until 2013 the main part of the CAP budget granted to farmers was spent on food that is very profitable, but not very healthy. This represents one of the reasons why fresh fruits and vegetables have increased in price over the past 20 years. Moreover, about 90 million tons of food are wasted in the EU every year, which means around 179 kg per person annually.
These data reflect the fact that the CAP was not subsidizing enough sustainable practices. Hence, there was the need to reform the CAP once again, in fact, after three years of negotiations and discussions, on 20 December 2013 the four basic regulations and the transition rules adopted were published in the official journal.
This reform is based on the assumption that only sustainable farming practices will achieve long term food security. More precisely, it requires a better targeting of support, a more equitable distribution of payments across the member states of the European Union and a strategic approach to spending. Through different kind of instruments it will be possible to achieve sustainability.
In order to reach the objectives and face the challenges of the recent reform, the EU needs to attain higher levels of food production security and it also needs to improve European products quality, without damaging the environment and natural resources. It is pretty clear that the damaging consequences would be tragic for the survival of the agricultural activity of the future generations.
What is also evident is that people, companies, institutions and every kind of reality is adopting the green thinking as a consequence of the awareness-raising campaign spread all over the world.
